Social media is a risky place for anyone in power.
A single post can spark a massive firestorm before the author even reaches for their phone.
And for one high-ranking military official, a rogue update has just triggered a frantic damage control operation.
A surprising message
The trouble started on Monday. A strange update appeared on the official Telegram channel of Andrei Gurulov. He is a Russian general and a member of parliament for the ruling United Russia party.
The message offered a dark assessment of the conflict. It bluntly claimed that Russian forces were stuck in a grinding stalemate at the front lines.
The post went even further, pointing out that the Ukrainian military now holds a clear technological advantage. It also highlighted severe fuel shortages across occupied Crimea.
Perhaps most alarming for the Russian public was a warning about the future. The text suggested a massive military mobilization is already planned for the fall of 2026. The stakes are high.
Claims of a hack
The post immediately caused an uproar online. Shortly after it went viral, Gurulov took to another platform to clear his name.
The general stated that hackers had taken control of his account. According to UNIAN, he wrote, “the channel was stolen and enemies are publishing false content from it.”
But the response was messy. The controversial message remained online long after his denial, which fueled wild rumors across social networks.
The Russian news outlet RTVI cited by O2 reported that the account might have been compromised days earlier. Behind the scenes, hackers had reportedly used the channel to send direct messages asking for cryptocurrency.
The bigger picture
This digital drama unfolds during a very difficult phase for Moscow. According to the Washington Post, the Kremlin faces growing pressure to end the conflict entirely.
The frontline offensive has slowed down while the state budget shrinks. Meanwhile, Ukraine continues to launch aggressive long range strikes. European officials believe Moscow is using loud public threats simply to hide these growing domestic struggles.
Despite the mounting bills, the Russian leadership refuses to pull back. The Institute for the Study of War notes that Vladimir Putin continues to reject cuts to the defense budget.
Analysts say Putin still believes a total victory is possible. This mindset keeps the war machine running, even as cracks begin to show in both the economy and the official narrative.
