The NYC Mayor is under fire after recent event regarding popular event.
Basketball isn’t the only thing dominating conversations in New York this week.
As the Knicks continue their deepest playoff run in decades, a public feud has erupted between Madison Square Garden owner James Dolan and city officials over security restrictions surrounding the NBA Finals.
With excitement across the city reaching extraordinary levels, a planned fan celebration outside Madison Square Garden has now become the latest source of controversy.
Dolan Slams City Officials
The dispute centers on a watch party that had been scheduled outside Madison Square Garden ahead of Game 4 of the NBA Finals.
City officials approved the event, but attendance was limited to between 500 and 999 people, with participants required to pass through a secured perimeter established by the New York Police Department.
That was not nearly enough for Dolan.
According to Reuters, The Knicks owner accused Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch of turning a celebration into a heavily restricted event.
MSG Sports went even further on Wednesday, claiming the city had transformed the area around the arena into a police-controlled zone.
Dolan had already fired off criticism the day before, calling the mayor and police commissioner New York’s “biggest party poopers.”
Watch Party Abruptly Canceled
Rather than move forward under the city’s conditions, Madison Square Garden pulled the plug on the event entirely.
Dolan argued that limiting attendance to roughly 1,000 people would leave thousands of supporters locked out while the team competes in its first home NBA Finals games in 27 years.
According to him, allowing only a small fraction of fans to participate defeated the purpose of the gathering.
City Hall pushed back against that characterization, noting that the requested permit had been approved and security plans had been developed to accommodate the event safely.
Mayor Mamdani responded by saying the cancellation was “breaking hearts across our city.”
Security Already Under Scrutiny
Questions about security around Madison Square Garden have been building throughout the week.
President Donald Trump attended Game 3 on Monday, prompting additional Secret Service measures and extensive road closures around the arena.
Several blocks were temporarily restricted as authorities worked to manage crowds and protect the former president.
Those precautions added to existing frustrations among some fans, who have already been dealing with soaring ticket prices and limited access to events connected to the Finals.
New York Gripped by Finals Fever
The Knicks’ return to the NBA Finals has transformed Midtown Manhattan into the center of the basketball world.
Tickets have become some of the most expensive seen in New York sports in years, while celebrities, politicians and high-profile guests continue to flood into Madison Square Garden.
Reports ahead of Game 4 suggested that Taylor Swift could be among the notable names attending.
Meanwhile, the basketball itself has almost become secondary to the atmosphere surrounding the series.
The Knicks entered Wednesday’s game holding a 2-1 lead over the San Antonio Spurs and hoping to move one step closer to a championship that generations of New York fans have been waiting to see.
For now, however, celebrations outside the arena have become nearly as contentious as the action taking place inside it.
