The Israeli military will stay in Lebanon, Syria and Gaza, the defense minister said.

“The deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete,” US President Donald Trump said Sunday in a post on Truth Social.

Much about the deal is still unknown, but according to reports, the agreement will end the fighting and see the Strait of Hormuz reopen, when the deal is signed on Friday.

According to Reuters, the deal has already sent oil prices tumbling on international markets, but there are still many unanswered questions about the agreement.

One of them is how Israel will react.

Israel to stay in Lebanon

According to Reuters, Israel’s Defence Minister, Israel Katz, has made it clear that if Iran attacks Israel because of events in Lebanon, the Israeli military will strike back.

“If Iran attacks Israel due to the events in Lebanon, we will attack it with all our might and clearly demonstrate to it the power gap,” Katz said.

In a statement, he made it clear that the Israeli military would remain in Lebanon, Gaza and Syria in what he calls “security zones” with no end date.

According to Katz, both he and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had made this clear to Donald Trump before the agreement was announced.

What is the deal exactly?

Although the deal between the US and Iran ends the fighting, it is described as a framework for upcoming negotiations.

Iran’s deputy foreign minister said that over the next 60 days, a more wide-ranging agreement, which would include sanctions relief for Iran, will be negotiated.

An important unanswered question about the framework is what exactly will happen to the Strait of Hormuz.

Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social that the Strait will open with the signing of the deal on Friday, June 19, but it is unclear whether the agreement will give Iran control over the Strait regarding the collection of transit fees.

Another source of confusion is the Iranian nuclear programme. According to Reuters, a US official said before the announcement of the framework that the agreement would eventually lead to the dismantling of the programme.

However, a senior Iranian official has said that the deal would allow Iran to keep its nuclear programme.
