Innovation in military conflict often comes from looking at old problems through a completely fresh lens.
When traditional technology faces heavy interference on the battlefield, engineers have to dream up clever ways to bypass modern defenses. According to RBC-Ukraine, a surprising new airborne invention is about to do exactly that.
Up in the clouds
Ukrainian designers have built a highly unusual missile called the DART that takes flight from high-altitude balloons. The Militarnyi portal reported that this new weapon can easily slip past enemy electronic warfare systems.
The Center of Innovative Technologies Program developed this special air-launch system to beat signal jammers. Huge balloons lift the weapons deep into the stratosphere, floating between 12 and 18 kilometres above the ground before launch.
Special servos keep the flight steady during the release. The missile itself is quite compact, measuring just 1.84 meters long and weighing a mere 13 kilograms.
Turning off signals
Its clever control system is what makes the weapon truly unique. RBC-Ukraine reported that the DART relies on normal navigation at first, but completely changes its strategy halfway through its flight.
When the missile drops to an altitude of six kilometres, it shuts off its navigation systems entirely. A solid-fuel engine then roars to life. This kick sends the weapon flying straight into its target on a fixed path.
Because its receivers are turned off, enemy radio jammers cannot touch it. This makes the payload physically impossible to disrupt with electronic warfare. Depending on the mission, the warhead weighs between 3.5 and 10 kilograms and uses sharp graphite elements to pierce defenses.
A different league
The developers are currently working with manufacturing partners who supply the balloons. They are preparing the DART for official recognition with the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense to unlock major government orders.
The team plans to scale up the technology to build full-scale ballistic missiles and air defense weapons. This fits into a broader push by Kyiv to develop homegrown strategic arms.
The Minister of Defense of Ukraine recently praised these new domestic capabilities. “Ukrainian ballistic missiles will change everything in this war. They will fundamentally change Ukraine’s status in the world. We’ve already changed it many times, but this is a completely different league,” he stated.
Meanwhile, local defense firm Fire Point has also finished testing its own new anti-ballistic missile system.
