Sailing across busy international shipping lanes usually brings a sense of relaxation.

But when civilian paths cross with heavily armed foreign warships, a peaceful trip can quickly turn into a high-stakes incident. Now, a British couple is locked in a tense dispute with their own government over a close call at sea, reports The Mirror.

Shots at sea

The drama unfolded on Tuesday in the English Channel. Jane Kelvey, 68, and her husband Alan, 70, were sailing their yacht, Bright Future, toward France. Suddenly, a Russian military frigate named the Admiral Grigorovich fired warning shots near them.

The Mirror reported that the confrontation happened 20 miles south of the Isle of Wight. The UK Ministry of Defence later assessed that the Russian crew fired because the yacht got too close. British officials also claimed the warship tried to radio the couple.

But the pensioners are not buying that explanation. In fact, they believe British defense officials are actively trying to suppress the truth.

A total coverup

Alan Kelvey strongly rejected the official government narrative during an interview with The Telegraph. He insisted that no one tried to contact them before the live rounds were fired.

“The MoD are saying they got us on the radio. Our radio, we were right next to it. It didn’t come on our radio,” Kelvey stated.

“They’re trying to close the story down now, saying that it was foggy and they were shooting flares up. It’s rubbish,” Kelvey told the outlet. When asked why officials would do this, he noted, “It’s inflammatory, isn’t it?”

Geopolitical friction

Meanwhile, Moscow offered its own version of the scare. The Russian Defence Ministry claimed the British yacht was on a dangerous course and ignored warning flares. They stated the frigate fired shots in strict accordance with safety rules.

The confrontation happened during a period of intense friction between London and Moscow. Just days earlier, British authorities seized a Russian shadow fleet oil tanker named the Smyrtos. A British naval vessel was actually watching the Russian frigate when the shots rang out.

Speaking to GB News, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer called the incident reckless but suggested it was not a deliberate attack.

“The incident in the Channel… [the] MoD assessment is that it was actually a drifting warship, rather than anything more sinister,” Starmer said. Downing Street later called it an isolated event, but the Kelveys remain deeply unconvinced.
