A striking silence
A recent drone attack on a Moscow oil refinery has left residents asking hard questions.
The local population wants to know how their supposedly impenetrable air defenses failed to protect vital infrastructure.
Despite the growing public panic, Vladimir Putin has refused to address the situation. According to the UNIAN news agency, the Russian leader’s silence points to deep internal problems.
The attack shatters an illusion of complete control that the government has spent years building. The embarrassment is simply too massive to explain away.
Failing defense network
A prominent Ukrainian military official believes the lack of a response exposes a major political crisis.
Ivan Tymochko, chairman of the Council of Reservists of the Land Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, shared his analysis with Ukrainian Radio cited by O2
He noted that Russian forces had previously moved heavy anti-aircraft systems directly into residential areas to protect the capital.
“What can he say about Moscow? They brought in everything they could, deploying Tory, Buk, S-300, and S-400 missiles within city limits, near homes and city centers, wherever they could find them. And the main effectiveness of their air defenses was hitting a fuel tanker in the center of Moscow,” Tymochko said.
Sensing the threat
The pressure is creating severe friction among Russian regional elites. Competing groups are trying to shift the blame while testing how the public might react to leadership changes.
“There is an internal understanding within the Kremlin itself that the war is no longer about victory for Putin, but about a direct threat to his regime and the Russian political elite. (…) It’s an internal discussion or a sounding board of public sentiment: whether it is morally ready to accept Putin’s absence,” Tymochko stated.
These strikes are part of a deliberate strategy that Ukrainian media outlets describe as far-reaching sanctions. The goal is to cripple oil revenues that fund the conflict.
Military expert Mick Ryan adds that the visible smoke over Moscow serves a powerful symbolic purpose. It proves to everyday citizens that the realities of war have finally reached their doorstep.
