Trump sends unmistakable 2028 signal despite being barred from another election victory.
Donald Trump has spent months insisting that US law stands in the way of another presidential campaign. His latest social media message, however, has put the subject back into the political conversation.
The 80-year-old president shared a black-and-white photograph of himself on Saturday wearing a “Trump 2028” hat, accompanied by a short message predicting victory.
Questions surrounding Trump’s intentions carry constitutional significance. The 22nd Amendment prevents a person from being elected president more than twice, meaning Trump cannot legally win another presidential term under the Constitution as it currently stands.
2028 message returns
Trump published the image on his social media platform shortly before 4.30pm EST. His hat carried the same 2028 branding that has appeared repeatedly during his second term.
“We are going to win,” read the text accompanying the photograph.
Trump has worn similar merchandise at several recent appearances, while an official “Trump 2028 Hat” is also available through his online store for $55.
Marketing surrounding the product goes further than simply mentioning another election year. The Trump Store promotes the hat with language about changing the established political order, including the phrase “Rewrite the rules.”
No announcement accompanying Saturday’s photograph established that Trump intends to become a candidate in 2028.
Constitution blocks another election victory
Trump himself acknowledged the constitutional barrier only days before publishing the latest photograph.
Speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland on Wednesday, the president said he would like another opportunity to seek the presidency but recognised that existing law prevents it.
“Everybody asks me that question, and, you know, that the law is very strong on that. I’d love to run, but the law is very strong,” Trump said.
His remarks followed persistent speculation generated partly by Trump himself through references to 2028 and appearances wearing the campaign-style merchandise.
Supporters have also raised the possibility at political events, according to Trump, although he has recently indicated that another campaign is not his plan.
Trump keeps the idea alive
Saturday’s post nevertheless provides fresh material for a debate that Trump has repeatedly revived.
Previous comments from the president have entertained the prospect of remaining in power beyond his current term, even as he has acknowledged the constitutional restriction. Recent remarks have moved closer to ruling out another campaign, without ending his use of 2028 imagery.
Current constitutional rules leave little ambiguity about the central issue. Trump was elected president in 2016 and again in 2024, reaching the two-election limit imposed by the 22nd Amendment.
Changing that restriction would require amending the Constitution, a process demanding approval by two-thirds of both chambers of Congress and ratification by three-fourths of the states.
Trump’s latest post did not outline any proposal to pursue such a constitutional amendment, nor did it explain precisely what victory the words “We are going to win” were intended to reference.
For now, the president continues to publicly acknowledge the legal restriction while simultaneously promoting imagery that places his name alongside the next presidential election year.
