Social media feeds constantly push huge promises to people searching for a fresh start. For workers seeking stability, a lucrative overseas job offer often feels like a golden ticket. Yet many of these contracts hide a darker reality.
Wilson Noel Quintero Guzmán thought he was taking a civilian security job when he flew to Russia in May 2026. The former Honduran military officer found a Facebook listing offering competitive pay. He expected to guard buildings, not dodge artillery shells.
Around the same time, a young worker from Paraguay clicked a TikTok advertisement promising a stable income. Marcos Nahuel Cáceres Bogado had no military background. He was simply looking for honest work, and did not expect to end up in a combat zone.
“They never told me it was for the war,” Cáceres Bogado said during an interview carried out by Ukrainian Defense Forces following his capture, reported by UNITED24 Media.
Stripped of rights
The deception became clear as soon as the recruits landed. Handlers confiscated their passports and forced them to sign documents written entirely in Russian. They were not allowed to get translations.
Recruiters then escorted the men to local banks. They seized the signing bonuses and sent the recruits straight to military bases. The foreign workers received no combat training before their deployment.
“They take away all your rights, take your documents away, put you in the bunker of a hotel, and tell you that you have no rights,” Quintero Guzmán said.
Sent to the trenches
Instead of safe civilian work, they found themselves facing abuse and near starvation. The recruits endured daily drone strikes and drank rainwater to stay alive.
The situation reached a breaking point when a Bolivian teammate was wounded. Russian commanders refused to provide medical care. The foreign recruits decided they had to escape.
Going back meant facing execution by their own commanders. Moving forward meant crossing a heavily mined battlefield toward the Ukrainian army.
A desperate getaway
As they attempted to flee their trench, Russian soldiers noticed and opened fire. The recruits shot back to defend themselves. They killed two Russian servicemen before grabbing radios and running into no man’s land.
Navigating hostile terrain, the men reached Ukrainian positions and raised a white flag. Ukrainian forces accepted the surrender and provided food.
“Everything you see on the Internet is a lie,” warned Cáceres Bogado following his capture, according to UNITED24 Media.
Ukrainian officials state that over 1,500 Latin Americans have been duped into joining the Russian military through similar schemes. Several South American governments are now trying to dismantle these deceptive networks.
