Ukraine’s drone forces reach major milestone in 2026 campaign against Russian air defenses

The Unmanned Systems Forces of Ukraine have hit their 300th confirmed target over 261 days in 2026, according to an official report shared on September 19 by unit commander Robert Brovdi.

Drone operators achieved the landmark figure by destroying a Buk-M3 surface-to-air missile system near the town of Ukrainka in the occupied Zaporizhzhia region.

That success capped off a high-intensity push. Operators hunted down 26 air defense units between September 10 and September 18 alone, raising the monthly total to 37 systems knocked out of action.

Clearing the skies

The extended campaign, known as Air Defense Fall or PPOpad-2026, relies strictly on video evidence to confirm every single successful strike.

Since the initiative began 261 days ago, military logs document damage or total destruction across 162 surface-to-air missile and anti-aircraft gun installations.

Crews also targeted 124 radar complexes and 14 electronic warfare systems. These high-tech units normally alert defending forces to incoming airborne attacks.

Systematically blinding these networks creates wide openings across enemy lines. That allows follow-up air strikes to penetrate far deeper into protected airspace without being detected.

Breaching the shield

Earlier missions during the campaign highlighted how these specialized aerial tactics can dismantle even the most heavily defended positions.

In one notable action near Gelendzhik, Ukrainian forces dismantled key air defense assets guarding Russian leader Vladimir Putin’s coastal residence.

Operators first knocked out a Volna Kupol Garant electronic warfare installation that had been deployed to jam Starlink satellite communications.

Eliminating that jamming station opened a crucial gap. Drone units commanded by Brovdi then struck an S-400 air defense system just 500 meters away, destroying a launcher and breaching the protective shield surrounding the heavily fortified estate.

Drone innovation at light speed

Ukraine’s use of UAVs and UGVs has played a key role in the country’s defense against the Russian invasion.

Most recently, the Brigadier Commander of the 3rd Ukrainian Army Corps revealed a world’s first use of a tactic where UAVs airlift kamikaze UGVs deep behind enemy lines before being used to outflank the Russian positions.

The tactic has been used as part of the ongoing Operation Vivaldi in the highly contested Donetsk Oblast, and the operation has reportedly managed to clear 125 square kilometers of Russian forces so far.
