The supposed ceasefire did not last long in the real world.

When powerful leaders take to social media to announce a major breakthrough, the world holds its breath to see if the facts line up.

A grand promise typed on a keyboard can look very different to the people living through a conflict. Sometimes, reality shatters the illusion almost immediately.

A surprise announcement

On Sunday, US President Donald Trump used Truth Social to declare a sudden halt to specific hostilities. He stated that a major agreement was in place to protect vital infrastructure.

“Effective immediately, there is an ENERGY ARMISTICE in the war between Russia and Ukraine,” Trump wrote in his post. “Both sides have agreed. Do not violate it! Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP.”

The declaration caught international observers off guard. Neither Moscow nor Kiev had previously hinted at such a diplomatic breakthrough, prompting AFP and Reuters to rapidly pick up the story.

Missiles hit the grid

The supposed ceasefire did not last long in the real world. Shortly after the American leader published his message, Russian forces launched a fresh wave of strikes.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that a major power plant was hit. Speaking to the nation, he pointed out that the devastating assault happened immediately after the American president announced his truce.

“Right now there has been an attack on the CHP-5 in Kharkiv, on the city’s energy infrastructure,” Zelensky stated. He noted that the violent strike occurred around 8 p.m. local time.

The attack quickly extended beyond industrial targets, bringing destruction into a quiet residential area.

Tragic toll in Kharkiv

The violence soon spilled into a Kharkiv suburb, where a Russian missile obliterated a local grocery store. Regional governor Oleh Syniehubov confirmed three immediate fatalities.

Nine other individuals suffered serious injuries in the blast. The casualties included two children, a grim fact that starkly contradicted the earlier promises of peace.

Meanwhile, officials in Kiev expressed deep confusion over the entire situation. A senior Ukrainian official told the Kyiv Independent that their government had never been informed about the energy truce Trump claimed to have brokered.

This glaring lack of communication raises serious questions about the origins of the supposed agreement. Kharkiv residents, however, have no time for politics. They must simply endure the harsh reality of a relentless war.
