The crew had to change course entirely and head north to St. Petersburg.
When a world leader travels, every detail is usually planned down to the exact second.
Airspace is cleared, security teams are briefed, and nothing is left to chance.
But sometimes, even the most carefully managed schedules fall apart in the face of an unexpected threat.
Sky high disruption
A major security alert brought commercial and official air traffic to a sudden halt on October 9. Russian airspace restrictions forced several high-profile government planes to abandon their scheduled landings.
The sudden chaos unfolded over the capital. Flight-tracking data revealed that several official aircraft either circled endlessly or diverted to other cities, according to The New York Times cited by United24Media.
The cause of the panic was a reported wave of unidentified aerial objects. Drones and balloons were spotted approaching the city, which forced authorities to ground flights at all major local airports for several hours.
This meant a high-profile returning delegation faced a complicated journey home.
The diverted jet
One of the planes caught in the disruption was a presidential Il-96 jet. The New York Times noted that this specific aircraft had just departed from Turkmenbashi.
The flight had been scheduled to bring officials back from a diplomatic summit in Turkmenistan. Instead, the crew had to change course entirely and head north to St. Petersburg.
The Russian leader had attended the Commonwealth of Independent States summit earlier that afternoon. In fact, photographs showed Vladimir Putin stepping off that exact aircraft when he arrived in Turkmenistan.
Even so, officials have not confirmed who was actually on board the diverted flight. The New York Times pointed out that the Russian president has access to a fleet of several Il-96-300PU planes, which can function as airborne command centers.
A rare disruption
This level of interference with top-tier government transport is highly unusual. A local Telegram channel named Novaya Ploshchad reported that four aircraft from the Special Flight Detachment were forced into holding patterns.
The channel noted that such a serious disruption to an international government flight had not happened since the start of the full-scale conflict in Ukraine.
The incident highlights growing security concerns over Russian skies. Just last month, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that Russian airspace was becoming dangerous for aviation.
Zelenskyy claimed that the conflict was effectively closing the skies over the country. He also stated that Russian authorities were failing to adequately warn international airlines about the real risks.
