Trump labeled the alleged election plot a “fraud on the public” as Alaska officials launch a formal investigation into the race.
A tight battle for one of Alaska’s Senate seats is underway with under a week to go before election night.
An explosive New York Times report just threw a wrench into that race. The report claims that the Democratic Party in Alaska recruited additional candidates to stack the ballot including a man who shares the same name as the Republican incumbent.
This has made the president furious as he demands that the Republican candidate should win and the Democratic nominee be prosecuted.
A New York Times article uncovers the race in Alaska
This controversy stems from yesterday’s New York Times article that alleges that Mary Peltola, the Democratic nominee and favorite to win the Senate seat in Alaska, sought to have Dan Sullivan enter Alaska’s Senate race. The incumbent senator is also named Dan Sullivan.
It is Peltola’s former campaign manager who alleges that she and her campaign recruited multiple candidates to stack the ballot so it was not just her and Dan Sullivan on it. According to her, Peltola was “definitely aware” of the scheme.
The former campaign manager, who was fired in August, has since retracted her statements. “As discussed on our call earlier today, I am confirming that I have retracted all statements made regarding the 2026 Alaska Senate Race,” she later wrote to The Times after agreeing to the interviews.
Mary Peltola categorically denies these allegations. “The Alaskans for Mary campaign has no involvement with either Sullivan campaign. Like Mary, our campaign is focused on lowering costs and fixing the rigged system in D.C. and did not recruit any candidates into the race,” the Peltola campaign said in a statement to The Hill.
Trump demands that Peltola resign and be prosecuted
Trump has taken this story and turned it into a point of emphasis that Democrats will try to steal elections.
On Truth Social, he wrote, “It has just been determined that the Democrats in Alaska illegally searched for, and recruited, a man named Dan Sullivan to run against our distinguished Republican Senator, Dan Sullivan […] Mary Peltola should suffer the Legal and Political consequences for what she has done, A FRAUD ON THE AMERICAN PUBLIC, and Dan Sullivan should be allowed to run without either Mary Peltola or FAKE Dan Sullivan on the Ballot.”
He later insisted that Mary Peltola should resign and be prosecuted criminally. “Mary Peltola should resign from the race. I think she should be prosecuted criminally for what she did,” Trump said on the airport tarmac in Washington, D.C., before heading to another campaign rally.
Furthermore, the Republican Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy has ordered an investigation into whether criminal charges or civil penalties should be brought over alleged Democratic efforts to confuse voters.
