Poland remains one of Ukraine’s most committed military backers, and it is now preparing a fresh batch of equipment destined for the war effort.

While full details are not yet disclosed, the announcement underscores Warsaw’s long-standing role as a critical supplier of heavy arms.

Talks Underway for More MiG-29 Fighters

Speaking to the Ukrainian outlet Europejska Prawda, Polish ambassador to Kyiv Piotr Łukasiewicz confirmed that the next military aid package—Poland’s 47th—will amount to nearly €200 million and is set to be delivered “in the coming months.”

While specific contents of the new package remain undisclosed, Łukasiewicz acknowledged that Poland is currently phasing out its MiG-29 fighter jets and that additional transfers to Ukraine are “quite possible.” Negotiations on this front are ongoing, he added.

Ukraine has already successfully adapted its existing MiG-29 fleet to accommodate certain NATO munitions, including AASM Hammer precision-guided bombs, making the aging Soviet-era jets a continued asset in combat operations.

Decades-Old Jets Still Valuable

The MiG-29, introduced in 1983 and powered by twin RD-33 engines, can reach speeds exceeding Mach 2.3. Despite its age, the aircraft remains valuable to Ukraine due to recent retrofits and battlefield familiarity.

Last September, Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski hinted at the possibility of further deliveries of these jets—a step that now appears increasingly likely.

Poland’s Military Support: A Massive Ledger

Łukasiewicz also highlighted that Poland’s 46th aid package was worth around €230 million, bringing the total value of Warsaw’s military support since 2022 to staggering levels.

Between the start of the war and the end of 2024, Poland provided over 300 tanks, 536 various armored vehicles, 136 artillery systems, 10 combat aircraft, and 10 helicopters to Ukraine. Among these were 14 Leopard 2A4 tanks, approximately 60 PT-91 Twardy tanks, and over 250 Soviet-era T-72 models.

The PT-91 Twardy, a modernized version of the T-72, is particularly appreciated by Ukrainian forces. Featuring reactive ERAWA armor, an Obra self-defense system, and a modern fire control system with thermal imaging, the tank has performed well on the battlefield, according to Kyiv’s assessments.

As reported by tech.wp.pl, Poland’s consistent contributions continue to play a vital role in Ukraine’s resistance against Russian aggression.
