Authorities in Cyprus have activated an early warning system to help residents find the nearest bunker in case of an emergency.

The move comes as tensions rise due to the ongoing attacks between Israel and Iran, Agerpres reports, citing DPA.

The new system uses the SafeCy app, which provides instructions and information on how to find shelter if an attack occurs.

According to Cyprus’ Interior Ministry, the country has about 2,200 safe rooms and bunkers available for use.

Cyprus is located close to the conflict area, and residents can observe the Iranian attacks on Israel and Israel’s retaliation from a distance.

Concerns Over British Military Bases

One of the main concerns for Cypriot authorities involves the two British military bases located on the island.

These bases could become potential targets if the conflict escalates.

The most important base is Akrotiri, located west of Limassol, about 275 kilometers northwest of Israel’s port city of Haifa. This base has been used in various military operations over the past decades.

The British Prime Minister confirmed that several fighter jets, reportedly Typhoons, have been sent to Cyprus.

However, when asked whether the jets would assist Israel in repelling Iranian attacks, Prime Minister Starmer said he would not give details on the quickly changing situation.

Israeli airlines have also rerouted some flights to Cyprus for security reasons since the latest attacks began. Strict security measures have been put in place at Larnaca and Paphos airports, according to the Cypriot radio station RIK.
