Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei publicly escalated tensions with Israel this week, pledging a fierce response and declaring “the battle begins” in a defiant message posted to social media.
The rhetoric marks the first direct statement from Khamenei since Israel launched strikes on Tehran’s nuclear and military sites.
Khamenei’s Vow of Retaliation
“In the name of the noble Haidar, the battle begins,” Khamenei wrote on his English-language X account, invoking a revered Shiite figure.
“We must give a strong response to the Zionist terrorist regime. We will show the Zionists no mercy,” he added, as quoted by HotNews.ro.

The statement followed a week of mutual strikes between Israel and Iran, escalating fears of a broader regional conflict.
Trump Signals Military Action
Simultaneously, U.S. President Donald Trump issued a stark warning to Tehran via Truth Social. Referring to Khamenei as a “soft target,” Trump said, “We know exactly where the so-called ‘supreme leader’ is hiding.
He is a target — but for now, we will not strike.” He emphasized, however, that America’s patience is “running out.”
In a separate post, Trump simply wrote: “UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER.”
Sources cited by CNN and Axios suggest Trump is seriously considering a direct military strike on Iran, particularly targeting the underground Fordo uranium enrichment facility.
White House officials have reportedly discussed a potential meeting with Iranian counterparts, though Trump indicated any talks would depend on “what happens when I return” to Washington.
U.S.-Israel Cooperation and GOP Response
While the U.S. has so far limited its involvement to defensive support, Israeli officials told Axios they believe an American offensive strike is likely imminent.
Trump reportedly returned early from the G7 summit in Canada to address the growing crisis, rejecting the idea of a ceasefire in favor of ending Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
Vice President J.D. Vance defended Trump’s actions, stating on X that the president had shown “remarkable restraint” and remained focused on protecting U.S. forces and civilians.
However, Vance acknowledged that Trump may “deem it necessary” to take further steps to end Iran’s enrichment activities.
As the region teeters on the edge of expanded warfare, both leaders’ rhetoric underscores the high stakes — and the uncertain path ahead.
