A long-running feud between tech leaders has moved from online clashes to the courtroom.

A long-running feud between tech leaders has moved from online clashes to the courtroom.

The outcome could shape both the future of artificial intelligence and one of Silicon Valley’s most closely watched companies.

Trial underway

According to WP Tech, Elon Musk’s lawsuit against OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman has begun in a federal court in Oakland, California.

A nine-person jury has been selected, with opening arguments underway and testimony expected from Musk, Altman and Microsoft chief Satya Nadella.

$150bn demand

Musk is seeking $150 billion in damages from OpenAI and Microsoft.

The report states he wants the funds directed to OpenAI’s non-profit arm, while also calling for the company to return to its original structure and for leadership changes, including the removal of key executives.

Mission dispute

At the center of the case is Musk’s claim that OpenAI abandoned its founding goal of developing AI for the benefit of humanity.

He argues the organisation shifted toward a profit-driven model despite his early investment of around $38 million.

Defence response

OpenAI denies the allegations, maintaining that Musk was aware of and supported its restructuring plans.

The company also claims, as cited by WP Tech, that the lawsuit followed Musk’s failure to secure a leadership role and came after he launched a competing AI venture.

Market stakes

The case unfolds as OpenAI faces intense competition from rivals such as Anthropic and continues to invest heavily in computing infrastructure.

Reuters has previously reported that a potential IPO could value the company at up to $1 trillion, making governance concerns raised in court particularly significant for investors.

Why it matters

An IPO would open OpenAI to public markets, increasing scrutiny over its leadership, structure and long-term strategy.

Any uncertainty highlighted during the trial could affect investor confidence and delay plans to list the company.

Personal conflict

The dispute has played out publicly for years, often through social media exchanges between Musk and Altman.

WP Tech notes that Musk recently referred to Altman as “Scam Altman,” underlining the personal tensions likely to surface during proceedings.
