Summer holidays often end with memories of warm oceans and sunny shores. But that lingering heat holds a dark side as the seasons turn. The same bath-like temperatures that draw tourists can quickly fuel something much more destructive.
Right now, a fierce low-pressure system is sweeping across the Mediterranean Sea. The storm originally formed between Sicily and Libya, and it is now steadily moving east.
Heavy rain and thunderstorms already slammed into southwestern Greece. Near the city of Chania on Crete, a downpour dumped over 30 millimeters of rain in just half an hour on Tuesday.
The harsh weather is far from over, according to DR. It will likely drench Crete next. After that, the storm is expected to track straight toward the coast of Turkey.
Eye of the storm
Forecasters are watching the swirling system closely. The storm is currently floating over surface water that measures roughly 28 degrees Celsius.
That extreme heat could transform a regular storm into a highly dangerous weather event. Meteorologists call this rare phenomenon a medicane. The term is simply a modern mashup of Mediterranean and hurricane.
These hybrid storms behave very differently than standard rain showers. They mimic the massive hurricanes that strike the Caribbean, spinning up violent winds and even forming a clear eye in the center.
Ghosts of the past
The region has seen this nightmare before. In September 2023, a massive storm named Daniel unleashed historic flooding across parts of Greece and North Africa.
The results were catastrophic. Two large dams failed near the Libyan coastal city of Derna, and rushing floodwaters killed an estimated 5,900 people.
History is full of these warnings. Medicane Ianos battered the Greek coastline three years earlier, hitting land with winds that matched a Category 2 hurricane, writes DR.
Fuel for the fire
A changing climate makes these extreme events more likely. The Mediterranean Sea has warmed by a steady 1.4 degrees Celsius over the last 40 years.
Sea surface temperatures broke historical records all summer long, according to data from Mercator Ocean International. The month of August was particularly brutal. It reached an unprecedented average of 28.3 degrees across the entire basin.
Warmer water acts like high-octane fuel for weather systems. Experts warn that while the total number of storms might drop, the ones that form will grow significantly stronger.
