Mark Hamill has once again reflected on the fate of Luke Skywalker, returning to a debate that has lingered among Star Wars fans for years.

His latest remarks revisit the character’s final act and question how it fits within the saga’s long-established mythology.

The comments arrive as discussion around The Last Jedi continues to resurface, years after the film’s release.

Luke’s death remains one of the trilogy’s most divisive moments, both for audiences and for the actor who portrayed him.

A controversial ending

Luke Skywalker dies at the climax of Star Wars: The Last Jedi after using the Force to project himself across the galaxy.

The illusion distracts Kylo Ren long enough for the Resistance to escape, but the effort drains Luke of his remaining life.

That ending has been debated since 2017, with fans questioning whether the Force had ever been portrayed as something that could be fatal through overuse.

Hamill himself has long acknowledged mixed feelings about how the character’s story concluded.

Speaking on CBS This Morning, as cited by Star Wars Holocron, Hamill addressed the idea with humor. “[It’s] funny that people miss the irony that [Luke Skywalker] died from an overdose of the Force,” he said.

Mentors unmentioned

Hamill suggested that, if such a risk existed, Luke’s mentors should have said something. “I mean, who knew that was even a thing?” he continued, still speaking to CBS This Morning.

He joked that Obi-Wan Kenobi or Yoda might have cautioned Luke about moderation. “Don’t you think if there was even a marginal chance that using the Force could be lethal, Obi-Wan would’ve said ‘Use the Force in moderation, Luke?’” Hamill said. “Nobody warned me!”

Despite the jokes, Hamill acknowledged that the story had reached its intended conclusion. “But obviously, they concluded his story, he died,” he added.

Personal misgivings

The actor has previously spoken about his discomfort with Luke’s portrayal in The Last Jedi, describing the character as having become “a suicidal hermit.”

He has said he struggled to reconcile that version of Luke with the hopeful hero audiences knew.

In earlier remarks, Hamill explained that he invented a dark personal backstory to make sense of Luke’s withdrawal.

He imagined the Jedi abandoning the Order after personal tragedy, though he stressed that this narrative was his own and not part of official canon.

Polarizing choices

The renewed discussion follows comments from director Rian Johnson earlier this week.

According to Johnson, he expected a polarized response to the film and believed it was better than playing things safe.

Johnson argued that treating audiences too gently would have been a worse outcome than challenging expectations within the franchise.
