Production has quietly reached a key moment on the next chapter of Star Wars for cinemas.
One of the franchise’s first films since the Skywalker Saga has now moved beyond the cameras.
The update offers a glimpse of how Disney and Lucasfilm are reshaping Star Wars for the big screen after several years focused largely on television.
A new milestone
Star Wars: Starfighter has finished filming ahead of its planned May 2027 release.
Director Shawn Levy confirmed the news by posting a behind-the-scenes image on Instagram.

Fans flooded the comments with excitement, welcoming Levy’s entry into the long-running franchise and marking the transition into post-production.
A fast shoot
Some viewers noted how quickly the film moved through production. Filming began in August 2025 and wrapped roughly four months later.
Actor Matt Smith, who plays a villain in the movie, recently said he had completed his work on the film.

Films return
Star Wars films have been released sparingly in recent years.
After The Rise of Skywalker closed the Skywalker Saga in 2019, Disney shifted attention to Disney+ series such as The Mandalorian, Andor, Ahsoka, and Skeleton Crew.
That approach is now changing. The Mandalorian and Grogu is set to arrive in theaters on May 22, 2026, marking the franchise’s theatrical return.
Starfighter will follow on May 28, 2027, positioning it as the second post-Skywalker Saga feature film.

The script was written by Jonathan Tropper, with Kathleen Kennedy producing alongside Levy. The film is expected to explore new stories set after the Skywalker Saga.
With post-production now underway, anticipation has room to grow as Star Wars prepares to open a brand-new chapter on the big screen.
