Reinventing a classic
Story Kitchen, a production company focused on video game adaptations, recently outlined new information about its collaboration with Amazon MGM Studios and Crystal Dynamics, the original creators of Tomb Raider.
According to the company’s website, the project will “reinvent the franchise on a massive scale” while weaving together the live-action show and future games into one shared narrative world.

Amazon has enlisted Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge to lead the effort. The studio says she will be “spearheading the next chapter of Tomb Raider, launching an ambitious reimagining of the Lara Croft universe.”
Sophie Turner, known for her role in Game of Thrones, has been cast as the new Lara Croft, confirming months of speculation after her name first surfaced in late 2024.
Creative leadership
Jonathan Van Tulleken, whose directing work on FX’s Shogun drew widespread praise, is set to both direct and executive-produce the series.
He will work alongside writer Chad Hodge, who is also serving as co-showrunner with Waller-Bridge.
Development began quietly in January 2023, with Prime Video officially granting the green light in May 2024.

Turner’s involvement was confirmed only recently, marking a significant milestone for the production team.

What comes next
Filming is expected to start in January 2026, according to early September reports.
Amazon has not yet announced a release window, and production timelines suggest viewers may be waiting some time before the series arrives.
