The achievement adds to a long track record of global box office dominance for Cameron-led projects.

A familiar world

According to Reuters, Avatar: Fire and Ash has generated $1.03 billion in worldwide ticket sales. It is Cameron’s fourth film to surpass the $1 billion mark.

The movie brings audiences back to the visually rich planet of Pandora. It continues the storyline from the previous film, following Jake and Neytiri as they cope with the death of one of their sons.

Walt Disney Studios reported that the film was released in time for the holiday season, a period traditionally strong for blockbuster cinema.

Franchise momentum

“Fire and Ash” is the third entry in the Avatar series. Together, the films have earned a combined $6.35 billion at the global box office, according to figures cited by Reuters.

Industry analysts say the franchise benefits from its immersive visuals and emphasis on theatrical viewing. “These movies consistently draw audiences to the movie theater,” Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends at Comscore, told Reuters.

He added that the films’ use of advanced 3D technology makes them especially suited for cinema screens rather than home viewing.

Record-setting roots

The original “Avatar,” released in 2009, remains a landmark in film history. It earned $2.9 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing movie ever in absolute terms, according to Comscore.

Adjusted for inflation and ticket prices over time, however, it ranks behind the 1939 epic “Gone With the Wind.”

The sequel, “Avatar: The Way of Water,” arrived 13 years later in 2022 and grossed more than $2.3 billion globally. It also won an Academy Award for best visual effects.

Disney said the latest Avatar installment earned $306 million in the United States and Canada, with an additional $777.1 million from international markets.

Those figures underline the franchise’s continued appeal outside North America, a key factor in reaching the billion-dollar threshold.

For Cameron, the success builds on earlier achievements. His 1997 film “Titanic” was his first billion-dollar hit and has since generated nearly $2.3 billion worldwide.
