He believes that continued sanctions against Russia as well as military backing for Ukraine is vital for changing the Russian elite’s minds.

If the war is to end with a fair peace, the Russian elite needs to realise that the invasion was a mistake to begin with – and that the goal of creating a new Russian empire is impossible.

That is the conclusion by the Polish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Radoslaw Sikorski, when he was interviewed by TVP World, Kyiv Post reports.

“We will get a fair solution only once Russian elites have concluded that the original invasion was a mistake and that the aim of rebuilding the Russian empire is unachievable,” Sikorski said in the interview.

Big time backer

Poland has been one of Kyiv’s most consistent supporters. Sikorski said Warsaw has delivered around 48 tranches of military aid and helped finance U.S.-made weapons, while hosting parts of Ukraine’s drone and missile production.

He said Poland remains engaged in diplomatic efforts despite not being present in every format, but confirmed the president has ruled out sending Polish troops.

Looking ahead, Sikorski said Europe must strengthen its own defence. “We need to build a military that Putin will be reluctant to challenge,” he said.

Continued backing and sanctions remain vital

Sikorski said sanctions and continued military backing for Kyiv are essential to changing that calculation.

According to him, economic pressure is key to forcing Russia to reconsider its strategy.

He then noted that Russia’s modest territorial advances have come at the cost of tens of thousands of soldiers, possibly more than 100,000, arguing that such losses make long-term conquest unrealistic.
