Buying a large family vehicle usually comes with the promise of comfort and safety on long road trips.
Drivers expect their vehicle interiors to withstand the daily wear and tear caused by children, pets and everyday use. Yet sometimes, the smallest design details can become the biggest source of frustration for owners, Reuters reports.
Peeling interior trim
A major American automaker is pulling over half a million popular SUVs off the road to fix an unexpected cabin hazard. According to a Reuters report, Ford is recalling exactly 548,463 vehicles across the United States due to a component defect.
The massive safety action targets a very specific issue located right between the front seats. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced the decision this week after identifying an interior flaw that could put families at risk.
The safety campaign specifically impacts certain Ford Expedition models built between 2018 and 2024. These massive SUVs are highly popular with suburban drivers who rely on them for daily school runs and long holiday vacations.
Unexpected sharp edges
The trouble stems from the decorative chrome plating used on the vehicle’s center console. Over time, this shiny trim can begin to bubble up. It then peels away from the plastic frame underneath.
Free dealership fixes
Fortunately, fixing the dangerous plastic trim will not cost vehicle owners a single penny out of pocket. Ford wants to resolve the safety issue as quickly as possible before more passenger injuries are reported.
Local dealerships plan to inspect the interior of all affected SUVs. Mechanics will completely replace the defective center consoles free of charge for every impacted customer.
The company will contact affected owners directly to schedule their repair appointments. Until then, drivers are being urged to keep a close eye on their front consoles to avoid accidental cuts.
