Authorities in Trinidad and Tobago are investigating a disturbing discovery at a cemetery that has raised serious questions about how human remains were handled.

Dozens of bodies, including infants, were found under unclear circumstances, prompting an urgent response, reports People.

Discovery revealed

The remains of 50 babies and six adults were uncovered at Cumuto Cemetery, according to PEOPLE, citing a statement from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS).

Police said the adult victims included four men and two women, with some showing signs of prior examinations.

According to PEOPLE, identification tags were found on most of the adult bodies, suggesting they may have been previously processed.

The discovery led officers to launch what they described as an immediate and urgent investigation.

Possible explanation

Authorities indicated early findings point toward improper handling of bodies.

“Preliminary indications suggest that this may be a case involving the unlawful disposal of unclaimed corpses,” police said.

According to PEOPLE, forensic teams are now working to establish the origin of the remains and how they ended up at the site.

Investigators have not yet confirmed which institutions or individuals may be responsible.

Official response

Police Commissioner Allister Guevarro acknowledged the seriousness of the situation and its wider impact.

“The nature of this discovery is deeply troubling, and we understand the emotional impact it will have on families and the wider national community.”

He added: “Every cadaver must be handled with dignity and lawful care. Any individual or institution found to have violated that duty will be held fully accountable.”

According to PEOPLE, authorities have pledged to provide updates as more verified information becomes available.

Wider context

The discovery comes amid broader security concerns in Trinidad and Tobago.

According to PEOPLE, a state of emergency was declared in March due to rising violent crime.

The Associated Press, cited by PEOPLE, reported that the country has experienced prolonged emergency measures in recent months and recorded dozens of killings so far in 2026.

A recent advisory from the U.S. Embassy also warned of crime risks and other security concerns across the country.
