Russia’s next target? New book sends ripples through European Country

New book sparks fear

It is not often a book sparks fear in an entire country. Nonetheless, this is exactly what the new Russian book, “The History of Lithuania” has done – for multiple reasons.

Casts doubt on existence

According to the independent Russian media, Meduza, the book questions both the existance of Lithuanian as a language, and even more chilling the very state-hood of Lithuania.

Forewords by Lavrov

What is even more concerning is that the foreword of the book is written by Sergey Lavrov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation. In the foreword, Lavrov accuses all the Baltic Nations (Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia) of using “falsified historical narratives to incite anti-Russian and Russophobig sentiments”.

“The History of Lithuania” is written by a nine-member team and published by the Moscow State Institute of Internatonal Relations. The lead-author is a veteran of the Russia-Ukraine war named Maxim Grigoryev.

Co-written by scetchy associate

Another noteable name on the list of Authors is Giedrius Grabauskas. He is a former associate of the Lithuanian politician, Algirdas Paleckis, whas was convicted of spying for Russia in 2021.

“We have seen this before”

In an interview with LRT Radio on July 30th, the Foreign Minister of Lithuania, Kestutis Budrys, called the book a tool for hostile activities, referring to the questoning of statehood and history. “We have seen this before, we are seeing it now, and this is just another example,” he said, reffering to the Kremlin casting doubt on the statehood of Ukraine year ago.

Russia’s next target?

The Baltic States were all occupied by the Soviet Union from 1940 until 1991, where the Soviet Union dissolved. Since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, the Baltic States has voiced their concern about being the next targets of Russian aggression
