When a large nation shifts its attention toward its smaller neighbors, the geopolitical landscape can change in an instant.
Protecting national borders requires constant vigilance, especially when longstanding alliances begin to fracture. Now, a prominent security official is warning that a new conflict zone could soon emerge, reports Ukrinform.
A realistic threat
Russia may be planning to use its familiar military playbook against another neighboring state. According to a report by UKRINFORM, a top Ukrainian official warned that a major escalation remains highly probable in the Caucasus region.
Kyrylo Budanov, the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, shared his grim outlook during a recent international security conference. He suggested that Moscow possesses more than enough military power to execute another cross-border campaign.
When asked at the Architecture of Security Forum whether Russia could launch a campaign against Armenia similar to its invasion of Ukraine, Budanov did not hold back. He pointed directly to the stark imbalance of power between the two nations.
Budanov stated, “In my personal opinion, yes, it is absolutely realistic. Why? Geography allows it. And there is no point in comparing Armenia’s capabilities with those of the Russian Federation. Everyone understands that,”
Shifting political alliances
The friction between the two former allies has been building up quietly for quite some time. UKRINFORM reported that Budanov noticed troubling warning signs flashing from Moscow toward Yerevan roughly two years ago.
Those simmering tensions recently boiled over into a public diplomatic dispute. The breakdown in communication follows a series of deliberate political moves by Armenian leaders to distance themselves from the Kremlin.
On May 30, the Russian Foreign Ministry took a decisive step by recalling its ambassador to Armenia, Sergey Kopyrkin, back to Moscow for urgent consultations. The diplomatic pullback served as a direct response to Armenia trying to build closer economic and political ties with the European Union.
As Yerevan looks westward for new partnerships, the risk of a harsh response from Moscow grows by the day. Security experts are watching the region closely to see if the warnings turn into reality.
