A captured Russian serviceman from a remote Siberian republic has formally requested to remain in Ukrainian custody. The soldier fears that returning to his home country would result in an immediate redeployment to the active frontline. His desperate plea highlights the continued exploitation of ethnic minorities within the ranks of the invading military forces.
A diverse and distant origin
The captured serviceman originally hails from Tuva, a southern Siberian region that shares a direct border with Mongolia. This remote area is predominantly home to ethnic Tuvans who maintain distinct cultural traditions and their own unique language. While Russian is used for official state business, the local dialect remains a core component of their regional identity.
The 80th Separate Air Assault Galician Brigade successfully captured the individual during combat operations in the Donetsk region. Military officials identified the prisoner as Andzhigash and subsequently released video footage detailing his difficult personal background. Upon his capture, the soldier explicitly stated that he identifies with his Tuvan roots rather than considering himself Russian.

According to military reports, the soldier speaks very limited Russian and struggles to communicate with standard military terminology. He initially joined the armed forces purely for financial reasons to escape the economic hardships of his home region. However, he quickly regretted this fateful decision and fled from his designated combat unit on his third day of service.
Forced into the firing line
Following his initial desertion, Russian authorities eventually apprehended the fleeing soldier and placed him in a military prison. While incarcerated, the serviceman allegedly faced severe physical abuse and constant intimidation from his strict military captors. The desperate soldier eventually abandoned his defensive post to search for life-saving food and water in the surrounding area. Following his surrender, Andzhigash explicitly begged his new captors not to include him in any upcoming prisoner exchange programs.
