European embassies in Kyiv refused Russian demands to evacuate the capital despite ongoing threats of mass aerial strikes.

European embassies are refusing to evacuate Kyiv despite direct Russian threats of further aerial strikes. According to the Kyiv Post, foreign diplomats publicly reaffirmed their support for Ukraine to counter Moscow’s intimidation tactics. The embassies of Germany, Italy, Spain, and Sweden published matching messages rejecting the recent warnings.

These unified diplomatic statements added to previous assurances from France, Poland, and Estonia. Representatives from these nations expressed severe concern regarding Russian threats against diplomats and foreign citizens. They officially called on Moscow to comply with the Vienna Convention and international humanitarian law.

European Union Ambassador Katarina Mathernova confirmed that all 25 member states with embassies are maintaining their presence. She noted that the diplomatic missions remain in close contact to assess ongoing security conditions. Mathernova described the Russian threats as an expression of frustration over battlefield failures.

International response and Ukrainian support

Polish officials explicitly ruled out any changes to the current operation of their embassy in Kyiv. The national foreign ministry stated that Moscow intended to intimidate Europe and weaken international support for Ukraine. Estonia echoed this sentiment while confirming its diplomatic mission would also remain in the capital.

Mathernova explained that these threats only strengthened European determination to continue supporting the embattled nation. She warned Russian authorities against testing the international conventions that govern protected diplomatic missions. The repeated references to the Vienna Convention highlighted Moscow’s binding international obligations.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha thanked the foreign diplomats who continue working despite the direct threats. He stated that the ongoing Russian campaign to intimidate the diplomatic corps has completely failed. The minister simultaneously urged Western allies to strengthen Ukrainian air defenses and impose stricter economic sanctions.

Disputed relocation reports and future threats

Anonymous diplomatic sources recently claimed that contingency plans were being drafted to relocate embassy staff. These unverified reports suggested potential relocations to the western city of Lviv or eastern Poland. The Ukrainian foreign ministry immediately refuted these claims regarding the potential transfer of diplomatic missions.

A government spokesperson noted that established conventions mandate formal notification prior to any mission transfer. Ukrainian authorities confirmed that they have received zero relocation requests from any foreign government. European Commission spokesperson Christian Wigand also dismissed the threats issued by the Russian foreign ministry.

Moscow recently warned foreign citizens and accredited diplomats in Kyiv of imminent mortal danger. The Russian government pledged to sustain large-scale mass aerial strikes across the entire capital region. However, European officials reaffirmed that the bloc will not scale back its defense assistance.
