A brutal awakening
Hundreds of foreign men have traveled east over the past year looking for steady work. They sign contracts with the Russian military expecting regular paychecks. Instead, they find themselves completely trapped.
For a Peruvian recruit named Oscar, that illusion shattered very quickly. According to the Latvian news outlet LA.LV, which cited reporting from Dialog.UA, the foreign fighter faced horrific abuse from his own superiors.
The conflict started over money. Oscar says his unit commander, a man nicknamed “Asik,” decided to drain his subordinate’s bank account.
The officer and his guards cornered the South American recruit. They demanded his bank card password immediately. The situation escalated rapidly when the commander threatened to murder Oscar and burn his remains if he stayed silent.
Losing a thumb
Oscar refused to hand over his financial lifeline. In response, the Russian soldiers physically restrained him and chopped off his right thumb.
This gruesome tactic achieved exactly what the rogue officers wanted.
According to the victim, several other Peruvian citizens witnessed the bloody amputation. Terrified by the violence, the other foreign recruits immediately handed over their cards and passwords to the Russian soldiers.
Oscar insists that top military officials were informed about the mutilation. Despite that awareness, he says local commanders actively tried to cover up the crime and silence the victims.
Trapped in combat
This nightmare is part of a much larger crisis for South American diplomats. Back in Lima, the Peruvian government is currently scrambling to evacuate its trapped citizens from the active conflict zone.
Data from the Peruvian Foreign Ministry paints a grim picture. Officials confirm that 459 citizens from the South American nation have joined the Russian army to fight in Ukraine.
The survival statistics are incredibly bleak. At least 11 of those men have been killed in action, three are prisoners in Ukraine, and another 114 are officially listed as missing.
Publicly available information shows a clear pattern of deception. Recruiters lure these men to Russia with promises of safe civilian jobs, only to force them onto the deadly front lines.
