The leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan are set to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington this week.

The trilateral summit, confirmed by Armenia’s foreign ministry, aims to finalize a peace agreement following years of conflict and the 2023 takeover of Nagorno-Karabakh by Azerbaijani forces.

Trump Steps In

The Washington summit comes at a time when Russia appears to be losing influence in the South Caucasus.

Once the dominant mediator in the region, the Russian president Vladimir Putin now finds himself sidelined, as former Soviet republics turn to the U.S. for leadership in brokering peace.
