The month that just closed on Ukraine’s frontline produced a number Kyiv has not seen in nearly five years of war.

Ukraine’s General Staff has finalized its count of Russian military casualties for October 2026 at 54,400 killed or seriously wounded, almost 11% higher than the preliminary 49,040 figure the same body reported three days before the end of the month.

The revision was announced by President Volodymyr Zelensky in his evening address on November 1. “In just one month, Russia lost 54,400 soldiers killed or seriously wounded. This is a record for any month of the full-scale war,” he said in a post on X.

The previous monthly high was 48,670, set in December 2024, meaning the new record surpasses the previous one by more than 10 percent.

October’s figure also sits 8,170 above September’s 46,230 count.

These numbers come from Ukraine’s General Staff and cannot be independently verified; Russia does not publish its own casualty data.

A single day set the pace

October’s spike was driven in part by a daily record on October 21, when Ukraine’s military logged 2,250 Russian casualties in 24 hours, according to Kyiv Independent, citing the General Staff. The daily average across the month was close to 1,755.

The General Staff said in a statement that the rate of losses now exceeds the enemy’s capacity to replenish its units. The same statement framed the scale of the toll in civilian terms, noting the number would fill 200 Moscow Metro carriages.

Zelensky linked the figure directly to the diplomatic track. “All Russia needs to do to stop these insane losses is choose a ceasefire and diplomacy,” he said.

Figures land as talks approach

Kyiv is heading into trilateral peace talks with Russia and the United States in Abu Dhabi, which Zelensky has said will take place between November 6 and November 10, according to Meduza.

The Kremlin has said the exact timing will depend on battlefield conditions.

Ukraine’s General Staff also reported that Kyiv’s forces retook 96.2 square kilometers in October against 85.8 square kilometers of ground gained by Russian troops over the same period.
