An investigation reveals how an IT worker recruited to fly drones was shuttled into a motorized rifle regiment—before vanishing at the front alongside 1.5 million rubles.
Russia’s army spent 2026 courting coders and students for its new drone units.
The Defense Ministry’s pitch has been pointed and polished: a one-year contract, a tech role far from the trenches, and recruiter visits to the country’s top universities.
One family from Chelyabinsk now says that pitch collapsed the moment the paperwork was signed.
In an investigation published on October 26 by independent Russian outlet iStories, a software developer identified by the pseudonym Nikolai is described as signing a Defense Ministry contract in early July 2026. An appendix specified that he would serve in a position tied to the operation of unmanned systems and receive training for that role.
He never did. Nikolai was sent instead to military unit No. 95378 in Samara Oblast, home to the 1437th Motorized Rifle Regiment, where he received no weapons instruction and was handed administrative work and clerical duties, iStories reported.
On September 10, Nikolai stopped responding to calls. Weeks later, his wife, identified as Irina, received an official notice that he had gone missing on September 28 while performing tasks during the “special military operation.”
1.5 million rubles and five laptops
While Nikolai was deployed, Irina told iStories, roughly 1.5 million rubles (more than 18,000 USD) vanished from his bank card. Among the charges she identified were five laptops ordered through the Ozon marketplace at 120,000 rubles each, routed to delivery addresses that were not hers.
She believes commanders in the regiment pocketed the money. “On the one hand, the regiment commander is a Hero of Russia,” Irina told iStories. “On the other, that same commander sees his soldiers as walking wallets.”
The 1437th Regiment is commanded by Colonel Vladimir Teslo, 31, who was awarded the Hero of Russia title in February 2024, iStories reported.
A unit with a documented record
The regiment is part of the 15th Separate Guards Motorized Rifle Brigade, nicknamed the “Black Hussars.”
The brigade took part in the occupation of Ukraine’s Kyiv region in the opening weeks of the war; its service members are suspected of torturing and killing civilians, and the unit itself has been linked to internal torture and extrajudicial killings, iStories wrote.
A pattern analysts have flagged
The Chelyabinsk case fits a documented pattern. In its January 25, 2026 campaign assessment, the Institute for the Study of War noted that some of the recruits brought in under Russia’s drone-contract push may also be used in regular ground units.
The Russian opposition outlet Astra has reported that recruits are pressured to sign standard defense contracts rather than specialized unmanned-systems agreements, giving commanders room to transfer them to infantry units and send them to the front.
Russia’s Defense Ministry has not publicly commented on Irina’s allegations. Nikolai’s status remains listed as missing in action.
