Promises of peace often sound wonderful from thousands of miles away.
Political leaders frequently declare breakthroughs that give exhausted civilians a sudden surge of hope.
But the situation on the front lines rarely matches the statements made online.
A surprise announcement
Donald Trump recently took to social media to announce a major diplomatic breakthrough in the European conflict. He claimed that a vital ceasefire agreement was already in place.
According to United24 Media, the president stated both warring nations agreed to stop targeting power plants and local refineries.
He shared the news on Truth Social and blamed the ongoing conflict for rising global fuel costs. “Ukraine agreed not to strike Russian energy facilities. Russia agreed to do exact same thing! Global diesel price increases are mainly caused by the war between Russia and Ukraine, not Iran,” Trump wrote.
This post followed recent diplomatic efforts behind closed doors. Presidential envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner traveled to Kyiv in early September to discuss a potential winter pause on energy strikes.
Exploding infrastructure
Despite the optimistic online post, fresh explosions tell a completely different story. Missiles and long-range drones continue to smash into critical infrastructure on both sides of the border.
Ukrainian forces launched a massive wave of deep strikes just this week. Drones hit the Syzran Oil Refinery in the Samara region on September 15, sparking multiple fires.
They also targeted commercial gas infrastructure in Taganrog. A day earlier, drone swarms struck energy and supply lines in the Russian resort city of Sochi, triggering massive blasts.
The campaign extends into occupied territories as well. Ukrainian strikes recently disabled electric distribution hubs in the occupied city of Mariupol.
Plunging into darkness
Russian forces have not stopped their aerial bombardments either. They continue to actively target the vulnerable Ukrainian power grid as temperatures begin to drop.
Russian drone and artillery strikes hammered electrical transmission equipment across eastern and northern Ukraine on September 10. The attacks forced widespread blackouts across the Chernihiv, Kharkiv, and Donetsk regions.
The destruction also targeted vital transport nodes. A Russian jet-powered drone struck a state railway hub near the Polish border on September 14, severely damaging local rail lines just after a European diplomatic transport passed through.
These daily bombardments directly contradict the idea of an active ceasefire. While diplomats might be talking in secure rooms, the skies remain incredibly dangerous.
