Ukrainian forces successfully intercepted a Russian Geran-5 drone using newly supplied interceptor drones capable of matching high speeds and altitudes.

Ukraine’s 1020th Anti-Aircraft Missile and Artillery Brigade received new interceptor drones capable of destroying jet-powered attack vehicles. According to United24 Media, the Serhiy Prytula Charity Foundation announced this development following a successful combat deployment. A specialized military crew known as Yastrub recently used these interceptors to shoot down a Russian Geran-5 drone.

The successful interception occurred while the aircraft was operating over the Chernihiv region. Ukrainian operators destroyed the Russian strike drone while it traveled at 425 kilometers per hour. The unmanned vehicle was flying at an altitude exceeding three kilometers when the interceptor struck.

The charity foundation noted the unique challenges associated with stopping these aerial threats. “Jet-powered Geran-5 drones fly at high speeds and altitudes, making them difficult for conventional countermeasures to intercept,” the organization stated. The newly supplied equipment provides frontline units with specialized tools necessary for neutralizing these targets.

Technical capabilities of the Geran-5

The Geran-5 represents a significant advancement over previous Russian strike drones like the Geran-3. The jet-powered attack vehicle features a maximum takeoff weight of approximately 850 kilograms. During flight, the aircraft maintains a cruising speed ranging between 450 and 600 kilometers per hour.

Ukrainian military intelligence assesses that the UAV can remain airborne for approximately two hours. The aircraft possesses an operational strike range capable of reaching targets up to 950 kilometers away. The drone is technically capable of operating at maximum altitudes reaching six kilometers above the ground.

Despite this high maximum altitude, Russian commanders typically deploy the weapons closer to the surface. Documented combat deployments indicate the aircraft usually operates at altitudes between 200 meters and three kilometers. The deployment of Ukrainian interceptor drones directly responds to this evolving threat profile.

Upgraded variants and optical navigation

The Russian military is currently introducing upgraded versions of the original Geran-5 platform. Ukrainian sources recently reported that invading forces began utilizing a new variant equipped with an optical navigation system. This modified aircraft is officially designated as the Geran-5 K5 by the Russian military.

The upgraded drone relies on stored terrain imagery to guide itself along designated flight routes. The platform features an electro-optical module utilizing digital scene matching area correlation technology. This hardware allows the weapon to operate effectively without relying on external satellite navigation signals.

The internal system continuously captures images of the ground below the aircraft during its flight. Its onboard computer determines the exact position by comparing these captured photographs with preloaded reference imagery. This optical correlation method ensures the drone navigates accurately along a predetermined route toward its target.
