The United States has authorized Turkey to transfer a package of rocket launchers and ballistic missiles to Ukraine.
The United States has approved a plan allowing Turkey to send weapons to Ukraine. This military transfer includes missile launchers, long-range ballistic missiles, and thousands of artillery rounds. The approval comes as the defending nation seeks to strengthen its forces against the Russian invasion.
A large weapons package
The approved shipment contains a large amount of artillery and rocket systems. According to a report by Kyiv Post, the transfer includes 12 multiple rocket launchers and 70 ballistic missiles. These weapons will provide the Ukrainian military with new firepower on the battlefield.
Beyond the missiles, the delivery also features a supply of unguided cluster rockets. The Kyiv Post article notes that exactly 2,524 of these rockets are included in the deal. These munitions are effective at covering wide areas and targeting scattered troop formations.
The package is rounded out by tens of thousands of artillery shells. Military documents confirm that 47,000 artillery rounds will soon make their way to the frontlines. This supply of ammunition will help sustain combat operations during ongoing battles.
Modernizing military arsenals
This weapon transfer provides benefits for both the receiving nation and the supplying country. Turkey wants to clear out its older military inventory to make room for newer technology. By giving these systems away, the Turkish military can focus its budget on modernizing its forces.
The logistical effort will be handled by a network of international defense contractors. According to Kyiv Post, private companies from Turkey, Bulgaria, and the United States will manage the delivery. The transfer of the weapons will begin once the congressional review period is completed.
For the defending forces, these incoming weapon systems are already familiar to their troops. European allies have previously supplied similar rocket launchers to the Ukrainian military over the past two years. This experience means that frontline soldiers can start using the Turkish equipment almost immediately.
Expanding long-range capabilities
The launchers included in this deal are versatile on the battlefield. These armored vehicles can fire standard unguided rockets as well as guided ballistic missiles. Having more of these mobile launchers allows the military to strike multiple targets at the same time.
The addition of the ballistic missiles gives the defending army a long-range combat advantage. As highlighted by Kyiv Post, these weapons are designed to expand the military’s overall strike capability. With this equipment, commanders can disrupt enemy supply chains from a safer distance.
These missiles are older variants of a tactical system that has already proven effective. Despite their age, they remain deadly when fired at enemy bases or fuel depots. This transfer ensures that the defending military can maintain its long-range pressure against the invading forces.
