France has officially declared operational readiness for its upgraded Mirage 2000D fighter jets, extending the service life of the iconic aircraft well into the fourth decade of the 21st century.

The modernization effort enhances strike precision, self-defense, and electronic warfare capabilities, ensuring the fleet remains relevant amid evolving military demands.

A Legacy Platform Reinvented

The Mirage 2000D, originally developed for conventional air-to-ground missions, is a two-seat variant of the broader Mirage 2000 family, produced by Dassault Aviation since 1983.

While other variants were tailored for air defense or nuclear delivery, the 2000D specialized in deep strike roles and has served as the workhorse of French expeditionary operations in Afghanistan, Libya, Mali, and the former Yugoslavia.

According to WP Tech, 50 aircraft underwent the RMV (Rénovation Mi-Vie) upgrade after delays and program reductions.

Initially intended to modernize 71 airframes, the plan was repeatedly revised due to budget cuts and the delayed delivery of Rafale jets.

Enhanced Strike Power and Survivability

Key enhancements include integration with advanced precision-guided munitions, such as the 454 kg GBU-48 and 907 kg GBU-50 satellite or laser-guided bombs.

The Mirage 2000D RMV retains its ability to launch SCALP-EG cruise missiles and earlier Paveway laser-guided bombs. In a notable addition, the aircraft now carries a 30mm DEFA 550 F3 cannon via the CC422 pod—filling a previous capability gap.

Air-to-air defenses were also upgraded with MBDA MICA IR missiles, replacing the older Matra R550 Magic II.

New sensor suites include the TALIOS targeting pod for laser-guided bomb delivery and reconnaissance, replacing multiple legacy systems, and the ASTAC pod for radio-frequency surveillance of enemy radar and weapon systems.

Ready for Modern Battlefields

Avionics improvements feature a new mission computer, enhanced multi-function cockpit displays, and integration of Link 16 tactical data exchange.

Remarkably, much of the software development was carried out internally by the French Air and Space Force.

These upgrades aim to keep the Mirage 2000D effective through at least 2035, when the new Rafale F5 fighter variant is expected to take over its role.

The revitalized Mirage fleet now stands as a formidable interim force, bridging legacy technology and next-generation airpower.
