The POTUS has a new idea – and it has already lead to backlash.
America’s 250th birthday is still on the horizon, but a proposal linked to the milestone celebration is already generating plenty of political heat.
Supporters of Donald Trump want to place the president’s portrait on a newly created $250 banknote, arguing that the anniversary offers a fitting opportunity to commemorate both the nation and the administration overseeing the occasion.
Critics, however, are urging the White House to abandon the idea altogether.
A New Banknote for a Historic Anniversary
Plans revolve around creating a special $250 bill tied to the 250th anniversary of American independence.
Proposal has received backing from figures within the Trump administration, but a significant legal obstacle remains in place.
Federal law dating back to 1866 prohibits living individuals from appearing on US currency.
Changing that rule would require Congress to approve new legislation.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed that lawmakers are currently considering such a measure.
“As treasury secretary, I have two mandates for US currency at present: that no living person can be on US currency, and the currency must say ‘In God we trust’,” Bessent said.
“So, right now, there is proposed legislation in front of the House, in front of the Senate, to change the first requirement, so that a living person – Donald J Trump – could be on the $250 bill.”
Bessent also stressed that any change remains in the hands of Congress.
Political Opposition Emerges
Proposal quickly drew criticism from Democratic lawmakers.
House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries dismissed the idea in blunt terms, according to Unilad.
“Hard No on a Trump $250 bill,” Jeffries wrote.
“Get over yourself. The upcoming July 4th anniversary is not about a wannabe King. It’s about celebrating the American journey.”
Comments immediately fueled a broader debate about whether commemorative currency should feature sitting political figures.
Treasury Preparing for Possibility
Despite uncertainty surrounding the legislation, officials appear to be examining what would be required if lawmakers ultimately approve the proposal.
According to a Treasury Department spokesperson, preparations are already underway.
“Should this legislative mandate be signed into law, the [Bureau of Engraving & Printing] is moving proactively to produce a $250 commemorative note which will appropriately recognize the 250th Anniversary of our great nation.”
Officials added that the department is conducting planning and due diligence while awaiting any decision from Capitol Hill.
Artist Behind the Design
Public attention has also turned toward the person responsible for designing a mock-up of the proposed banknote.
British artist Iain Alexander told The Washington Post that he created the concept artwork and described himself as the president’s favourite British artist.
Whether the design ever becomes reality now depends on a legislative battle that could prove every bit as controversial as the image appearing on the note itself.
For now, George Washington and the other historical figures featured on American currency remain safe from replacement.
