Russia is building a new military base near Finland that could eventually house up to 6,000 troops.

In Karelia, Russia is establishing a new garrison at Novaya Vilga.

The base is expected to accommodate several thousand soldiers, estimated at between 4,000 and 6,000, according to Yle.

Construction began earlier this year, and several large buildings are already under construction. The project is part of Russia’s military expansion in areas close to the borders of NATO countries.

Experts believe the base could eventually strengthen Russia’s military capabilities in the region, although the facility is still far from being fully operational.

Part of a Larger Build-Up

The plans include a large military complex with multiple functions.

Among other things, the area will include accommodation for soldiers, residential housing, and a range of facilities intended to support day-to-day operations.

Retired Finnish Major Marko Eklund sees the project as part of a broader Russian effort to strengthen its armed forces along NATO’s borders.

“The number of combat troops on the ground is growing very quickly,” Eklund told Yle.

Will Take Several Years

Although construction is progressing rapidly, Eklund does not expect the new forces to have a decisive impact in the short term. He points out that personnel, equipment, and infrastructure still need to be developed.

“You cannot build a modern army using rusty tanks from Siberian testing grounds, so it will take a great deal of time and money,” he said.

According to Eklund, the future garrison will only gain real military significance once soldiers have been recruited, trained, and equipped.

Until then, the construction will primarily serve as an indication of Russia’s long-term plans for the region, Yle reports.

Russia Shifts Focus Toward the NATO Border

The construction of the new garrison is likely linked to Finland’s NATO membership, according to Militarnyi.

After Finland joined the alliance in 2023, Russia re-established the so-called Leningrad Military District, which includes Karelia and areas along the Finnish border.

Several analysts believe the new base near Petrozavodsk is part of a long-term reorganization of Russian forces in Northwestern Europe.
