Agreements between neighboring countries usually run quietly in the background of everyday life.

But when a massive economic contract nears its expiration date, the tension suddenly impacts millions of working people.

Billions of dollars hang in the balance when political leaders disagree. Sometimes, the loudest voices prefer to simply tear up the paperwork.

Walking away

US President Donald Trump just dropped a major hint about the future of North American trade. He spoke to reporters right before leaving the French G7 summit on Wednesday.

The American leader actively questioned the value of the massive pact linking his country with Canada and Mexico.

Talks are currently ongoing. Leaders from all three nations are trying to figure out a brand new arrangement.

Instead of pushing for a swift compromise, the president suggested that his domestic economy operates much better without these international constraints.

The unexpected comments sent immediate shockwaves through the global financial community.

Preferring a clean break

Trump addressed the complex negotiations with a surprisingly blunt assessment of the situation. He openly floated the idea of entirely abandoning the trilateral framework, according to a report by Global News.

“I would rather not have the agreement, but I may sign it, but we [the U.S.] do better as a country when we don’t have an agreement,” Trump stated.

The current deal faces a massive deadline on July 1. Officials must decide whether to replace the framework or renew it for another decade under the existing terms.

The president made his personal preference incredibly clear during his brief press conference. “It’s not sticking around. It’ll be terminated, in other words, it expires. I prefer that,” Trump added.

Calming the waters

While the American leader talks about walking away, Canadian officials are working overtime to prevent a widespread panic. Mark Wiseman serves as the Canadian ambassador to the United States.

He recently spoke to a crowded room of business leaders in Toronto to calm their nerves.

Markets hate uncertainty more than anything else. Wiseman desperately tried to soothe anxious investors ahead of the looming summer deadline.

The ambassador firmly told the crowd that “it’s all going to be OK,” Global News reported.

Wiseman also reminded the audience that the actual trade pact still has a decade left before it legally vanishes. So, politicians still have plenty of time to resolve their differences before the trading relationship officially falls apart.
