Fast food menus constantly change to keep up with shifting health trends.

What was once a staple of American culture can vanish overnight, leaving nothing but fond memories for loyal fans. Now, a massive brand is digging into its archives to revive a classic dessert, reports UNILAD.

A crispy comeback

This week, McDonald’s announced the return of a beloved sweet treat across the United States. The fast food chain wants to celebrate America’s 250th birthday in a major way, according to a report by UNILAD. Starting on June 23, the iconic fried apple pie will hit stores.

It marks the first time the item will be widely available domestically since 1992. Back then, the chain swapped the recipe for a baked alternative because consumers panicked over fat and cholesterol. But some places never stopped frying them.

Diners in the United Kingdom still enjoy the original recipe. It packs 220 calories, which is actually ten fewer than the current American baked pastry.

Deep fried history

First created in Tennessee by a franchisee named Litton Cochran, the rectangular treat has a rich history. McDonald’s officially rolled out the dessert nationwide in 1968. It debuted alongside the legendary Big Mac.

Pulling the item in the nineties left a massive void for dessert lovers. Now, that long absence is finally ending.

The corporate announcement on X triggered a massive wave of replies. One user exclaimed: “What is this for reals?!?!? Is it really back?!?!? The lava filled Fried Apple Pies?!?!?! Super siiiick!!! The secret of the Fried Apple Pies is the beef tallow!! Awesome as always! You all do listen to the fans!”

Tasting the past

As news spread, regular customers flooded the internet with joyful comments. One fan wrote: “I am so happy that the fried apple pie is coming back.”

For older generations, the crunchy snack brings back powerful waves of nostalgia. Another nostalgic post read: “The best back in the day glad the new generation get to enjoy the taste of yesteryear.”

While the treats will hit most American stores next week, they will only stick around for a limited time. Make sure to blow on the molten fruit filling before taking that first crunchy bite.
