Issues withing the Trump-family has come to a conclusion.

President Donald Trump and his niece, Mary Trump, have reached a settlement in a lawsuit tied to the release of financial information that helped fuel a landmark New York Times investigation into the Trump family’s finances and tax practices.

Reuters via. court records filed in New York show that both sides have agreed to resolve the case and are expected to formally ask the court to dismiss it in the coming weeks. Details of the agreement have not been made public.

Family feud reaches settlement

Donald Trump launched the lawsuit in 2021, accusing Mary Trump of violating confidentiality obligations connected to a family settlement reached two decades earlier following disputes over the estate of Fred Trump Sr., the family’s patriarch.

According to the complaint, the president alleged that his niece worked with reporters at The New York Times to obtain and share tax records that later formed the basis of the newspaper’s Pulitzer Prize-winning 2018 investigation.

Legal filings described the alleged collaboration as part of a broader effort to damage Trump’s reputation and advance political objectives.

Mary Trump publicly identified herself

Mary Trump, a psychologist and author, later confirmed that she had served as a source for the newspaper. Her role became public knowledge following the release of her 2020 bestselling memoir, Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World’s Most Dangerous Man.

Questions surrounding the confidentiality agreement became a central issue in the legal battle.

A New York appeals court ruled in 2024 that Trump’s claims regarding the agreement had a substantial legal foundation. At the same time, judges suggested any eventual compensation could be far lower than the $100 million sought by the president.

Other legal battles surrounded the case

Mary Trump’s legal team argued that the lawsuit should be dismissed under New York laws designed to protect free speech and prevent litigation intended to silence critics.

Separate claims brought by Donald Trump against The New York Times and several reporters were dismissed in 2023. A judge later ordered him to pay nearly $393,000 toward the defendants’ legal expenses.

Another family dispute also ended unsuccessfully for Mary Trump when a judge dismissed her lawsuit accusing Donald Trump and two of his siblings of depriving her of a multimillion-dollar inheritance.

Neither side has publicly commented on the terms of the newly announced settlement, which would permanently close the case once a final dismissal is approved by the court.
