Navigating high-stakes international diplomacy requires a careful balance of public solidarity and behind-the-scenes dealmaking.

When global leaders gather to address ongoing conflicts, the official statements often mask intense, conditional negotiations. A seasoned diplomat has now issued a stark warning about a potential high-profile meeting that could shift the balance of power, reports Digi24.ro.

A fatal mistake

Former US Ambassador to Ukraine Steven Pifer recently shared his concerns about potential peace talks. Speaking to the Kyiv Post, Pifer warned that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky should not agree to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. He explicitly called such a move a “fatal mistake.”

The warning comes as the G7 group of nations pledges stronger military support for Ukraine. Leaders promised to boost vital air defenses. They also plan to target Russia’s massive fossil fuel revenues to weaken its war economy. Still, Pifer warned that these promises only matter if followed by real action.

The summit also revealed a surprising development regarding US President Donald Trump. European leaders reported that Trump is taking a much tougher line against Moscow than before. French President Emmanuel Macron praised what he described as a “very profound change in the US approach” to the conflict.

A surprise condition

According to Macron, Trump now recognizes that Putin has no serious interest in peace. An anonymous diplomatic source told AFP that G7 nations even agreed to let Ukrainian companies manufacture their own long-range missiles and air defense systems. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni backed this up, reporting great unity among the allies.

However, American support may come with a significant catch. Reports from Politico suggest that Trump has conditioned his firm backing on a completely different geopolitical issue. During closed-door meetings, the American president allegedly demanded that European nations help clear maritime mines in the Middle East.

Specifically, Trump wants European allies to secure the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. Slicing through dangerous naval mines in the Middle East would trigger stronger US pressure on Russia. This unexpected condition shows just how complicated international wartime alliances can be.
