A criminal investigation has concluded after concerns emerged over access to sensitive records at the London Clinic.

Britain’s privacy watchdog has closed a high-profile investigation into an alleged attempt to profit from confidential medical information linked to Catherine, Princess of Wales, nearly two years after concerns first emerged about access to records at the London Clinic.

According to Reuters, authorities said a former healthcare worker had deliberately misused sensitive information and offered to disclose it for financial gain, bringing fresh attention to the handling of private medical data at one of the country’s best-known private hospitals.

Investigation reaches conclusion

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), the UK’s data protection regulator, confirmed on Wednesday that its criminal investigation had concluded. According to the watchdog, a former member of staff improperly handled highly sensitive personal information and attempted to sell it.

While the ICO declined to identify the individual whose records were involved, British broadcaster Sky News reported that the case related to Princess Kate.

Officials said a formal caution had been issued in connection with the offence.

Questions first surfaced in March 2024 after reports suggested hospital staff may have tried to access records connected to Kate’s treatment at the London Clinic, where she underwent abdominal surgery earlier that year.

No wider problems found

Investigators examined whether broader failures within the hospital had allowed confidential information to be accessed improperly.

Following its review, the ICO said it found no evidence of wider systemic issues at the London Clinic.

The hospital, one of Britain’s largest private medical facilities, has treated several senior members of the Royal Family over the years, including King Charles.

Kensington Palace declined to comment on the outcome of the investigation.

Health concerns dominated 2024

Public interest in Kate’s health intensified after her January 2024 surgery. Months later, the Princess of Wales revealed she had begun chemotherapy after tests identified an unspecified form of cancer.

Details surrounding her condition remained largely private throughout treatment, making reports of possible attempts to access or sell medical information particularly sensitive.

Recovery has progressed steadily since then. Kate announced last year that she was in remission and has gradually resumed official duties.

Return to public life

Recent months have seen the Princess return to a more visible role within the Royal Family.

Last month, she carried out her first official overseas engagement since completing treatment during a visit to Italy, marking another step in her return to public duties after a challenging period for both her and the wider royal household.

Wednesday’s findings close a case that drew significant public attention and renewed debate over patient privacy, particularly when high-profile figures receive medical care.
