Weight-loss medications have transformed the conversation around obesity treatment, but a growing question remains at the center of the debate: which option delivers the best results?

According to Unilad, as newer treatments enter the market and demand continues to surge, healthcare professionals are increasingly comparing the effectiveness of leading medications such as Wegovy and Mounjaro. A newly approved pill version of Wegovy has added another dimension to the discussion.

Different approaches, same goal

Both medicines are designed to help people lose weight, but they work in different ways.

Wegovy relies on a GLP-1 receptor to regulate appetite and food intake. Mounjaro, meanwhile, targets both GLP-1 and GIP receptors, a combination that some specialists believe may contribute to greater weight-loss outcomes.

According to Abdal Alvi, Chief Clinical Officer at Simple Online Pharmacy, current research places Mounjaro at the top of the weight-loss hierarchy.

“Mounjaro currently delivers the greatest average weight loss seen in obesity medication trials, which is why it has generated such significant interest among both patients and healthcare professionals.”

Manufacturers of Wegovy, however, note that no direct head-to-head clinical trials have definitively compared the two drugs, making it difficult to draw firm conclusions about which treatment is superior overall.

No universal solution

Medical experts continue to stress that effectiveness is only one part of the equation.

Treatment decisions often depend on lifestyle, convenience, long-term adherence and individual health needs. Some patients may prefer a weekly injection, while others are more comfortable taking a daily tablet.

Recent regulatory approval in the United Kingdom has brought a new oral version of Wegovy to market, offering an alternative for people who would rather avoid injections altogether.

Healthcare professionals say the expanded range of options could help more patients find a treatment that suits their circumstances.

New pill broadens treatment choices

The approval of the oral medication has been welcomed by obesity specialists, particularly as obesity rates remain elevated and demand for treatment continues to grow.

Professor Naveed Sattar of the University of Glasgow described the development as an important addition to the available toolkit.

“The approval of the once-daily oral form of Wegovy (semaglutide) is welcome news for people living with obesity, particularly those who would prefer not to use injections.”

Researchers and clinicians say broader access to different treatment formats may help patients maintain long-term weight-loss strategies more successfully, especially as healthcare providers increasingly emphasize personalized approaches rather than one-size-fits-all solutions.
