The US military is getting ready to use its first official laser weapon system to destroy enemy drones at the speed of light.
The United States military is moving forward with an exciting new project to fight airborne threats. After decades of research, the defense department is getting ready to use laser weapons that can destroy targets at the speed of light. This new technology is designed to shoot down cheap drones and missiles without wasting expensive traditional weapons.
Entering a new warfare era
The US Army is currently finalizing a deal with a company called AeroVironment to build a powerful new laser system. According to a report by Digi24, this would be the first laser weapon to officially join the military’s everyday toolkit. This program moves past older experimental models and brings the technology straight to the actual battlefield.
The military urgently needs to adapt to a changing battlefield where cheap drones are becoming a major problem. Huge swarms of these low-cost drones can easily overwhelm normal air defenses and quickly drain military budgets. Right now, fighting off these simple machines forces armies to fire missiles that cost millions of dollars each.
The new laser technology recently showed very promising results during official tests in New Mexico. As noted by Digi24, other branches of the military are already testing similar defenses all over the world. In fact, the US Navy has been using a blinding and tracking laser system on its ships for years.
Overcoming operational challenges
Even though the main laser technology works, engineers still face big challenges when bringing these systems into real combat. Soldiers must make sure the sensitive equipment can survive harsh weather, extreme heat, and heavy dust. Creating good repair plans and specialized training programs is just as important as perfecting the weapon itself.
The extreme power of these laser beams also creates unique safety risks for friendly forces nearby. Operators must be very careful not to accidentally hit friendly airplanes or commercial satellites in space. These strict safety rules are a big reason why laser weapons have taken so long to become a normal part of military operations.
These light-based weapons also have strict physical limits when it comes to their range and targeting abilities. According to Digi24, lasers need a clear, straight line of sight to actually hit an incoming drone or missile. This requirement makes it nearly impossible for the systems to shoot down targets hiding just over the horizon.
Complementing traditional defenses
Because of these physical limits, laser weapons will not completely replace traditional missile defenses. Instead, military leaders see these light beams as just one part of a much larger defense strategy. Lasers work incredibly well against targets directly overhead, but they still need help from other weapons to hit distant threats.
The United States is also sharing its research to help friendly nations build their own laser defenses. As highlighted by Digi24, America recently helped Israel develop its own Iron Beam laser system. This teamwork aims to create a strong global defense against the rising threat of enemy drone swarms.
To build even stronger defenses, the Pentagon is spending a lot of money on other anti-drone technologies. The military is actively creating a new generation of traditional missiles that cost much less than older models. At the same time, engineers are using radio jammers to block the signals that connect enemy drones to their human pilots.
