Donald Trump was the star of his midterm convention with a speech lasting over two hours.
The big Trump-a-palooza convention kicked off last night. The new convention, hastily put together by the White House, is being held partially to reignite the downtrodden Republican Party.
The star of the show was, of course, the president himself. He spoke for more than two hours to finish night one.
His speech touched on an array of subjects, including the fact that the voters are not voting for Trump come November. According to Trump, they should pretend as though they are.
Trump is desperate for votes
When Donald Trump took center stage at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, he had a special message for the American voters. He urged them to set aside the candidates who are on the ballot and assume they are voting for Trump instead.
“Pretend that I am on the ballot,” Trump told the crowd during his speech. “I’m on the ballot.”
The former president acknowledged that the ruling party usually loses a majority in one of the chambers. “The midterms are not supposed to be won by the sitting president,” he told the crowd. “We are going to change that.”
The convention was half-empty before Trump showed up
While the lower level of the American Airlines Center was buzzing before Trump arrived, the upper deck remained mostly empty.
During his marathon speech, Trump played his greatest hits with topics bouncing from border security and economic policy to attacks on Democratic candidates who are in close races against the Republicans Trump has handpicked.
Even when Trump was not on stage, he was omnipresent. NBC News reported that speakers mentioned Trump’s name 155 times throughout the opening night.
Trump’s approval ratings are abysmal
One of the Democrats Trump targeted was Abdul El-Sayed from Michigan, who is running against Mike Rogers. It is becoming a tradition that El-Sayed is being targeted by Republicans. This time he went after El-Sayed’s sister and mother.
“His sister celebrated the terrorist slaughter of babies on October 7. She thought it was a great thing,” Trump read from the teleprompter. “His mother worked for an organization that gave hundreds of thousands of dollars to people who follow Osama bin Laden,” Trump concluded.
These allegations, which are not substantiated, are part of a larger plan for Trump and the GOP to undermine and discredit Democrats amid his approval ratings that are at an all-time low.
Trump is afraid the voters will not go to the polls in under two months, which is why Trump is telling his voter base to vote as if he were on the ballot.
