Donald Trump’s relationship with Ivanka comes under renewed scrutiny after his niece shares uncomfortable childhood memories.

Donald Trump’s family relationships have attracted almost as much public attention as his political career. Yet despite decades in the spotlight, much of what happens behind closed doors within the Trump family remains a matter of private recollections and occasionally conflicting accounts.

Few relatives have been more willing to discuss those relationships publicly than Mary Trump, the president’s estranged niece, who has repeatedly challenged the image her uncle presents to the outside world.

Now, she has offered another glimpse into the family’s past, describing Donald Trump’s approach to fatherhood and recalling behavior involving his eldest daughter, Ivanka, that she says made her uncomfortable, RadarOnline can reveal.

Speaking on the British podcast The Rest Is Politics, Mary portrayed her uncle as an emotionally distant parent whose relationship with Ivanka appeared noticeably different from those he had with his other children.

Her remarks, later published in an edited transcript on October 22, include a personal recollection that she struggled to explain even years afterward.

Mary Trump paints an unflattering picture of her uncle as a father

Mary Trump, a clinical psychologist and the daughter of Donald Trump’s late older brother, Fred Trump Jr., discussed her childhood experiences with podcast hosts Alastair Campbell and Rory Stewart.

Although she belongs to the same family, Mary explained that she did not grow up particularly close to her younger cousins.

Donald Trump Jr. was 12 years younger than her, while Ivanka was approximately 16 years younger.

Their families generally saw each other during major holidays, particularly Thanksgiving and Christmas, rather than spending substantial amounts of time together throughout the year.

Nevertheless, Mary said those encounters shaped her impression of her uncle’s parenting.

“He was an entirely hands-off father. He had no real interest in his children,” she said.

According to Mary, she rarely witnessed what she considered meaningful emotional involvement between Donald Trump and his children.

She was particularly critical of his relationship with his two eldest sons, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump.

Mary said she did not observe a strong emotional connection between the president and his children, “certainly not to the two older boys.”

Her observations were also limited by how little contact she had with some members of the family.

She acknowledged that she barely knew Tiffany Trump and had never met Barron Trump, the president’s youngest son.

The remarks therefore reflect Mary’s own experiences and impressions rather than a comprehensive account of Trump’s relationships with all five of his children.

Ivanka’s relationship with Trump stood out to her

While discussing the president’s apparent emotional distance from his children, Mary identified one relationship that she remembered differently.

According to her, Trump’s behavior toward Ivanka became particularly noticeable as his eldest daughter grew older.

“When Ivanka got older, he had this very odd attachment to her, but I cannot exactly say that it was paternal,” Mary said.

She then described a recurring interaction that she remembered finding uncomfortable.

“She was constantly sitting on his lap, and I cannot really explain it, but I found it odd and off-putting,” she recalled.

Mary did not provide specific dates or further details about the occasions she described.

Nor did she accuse her uncle of sexual misconduct or identify any particular wrongdoing involving Ivanka.

Instead, she presented the behavior as something she personally found unusual within the family dynamic.

The distinction matters because Mary’s comments concern her interpretation of interactions she says she witnessed, not an independently established account of inappropriate conduct.

Nevertheless, the recollection adds another personal perspective to the longstanding public discussion surrounding Trump’s relationship with his eldest daughter.

Trump’s past comments about Ivanka return to attention

Mary’s remarks also recall an earlier controversy involving comments Trump made about Ivanka during a television appearance.

In 2006, Trump appeared on the daytime talk show The View, where the conversation turned to a hypothetical question about whether Ivanka might pose for Playboy.

Trump responded by commenting on his daughter’s appearance before making a remark that attracted widespread attention.

“I’ve said if Ivanka weren’t my daughter, perhaps I’d be dating her,” he said.

The statement subsequently became one of the most frequently discussed examples of Trump’s public comments about Ivanka.

At the time, a spokesperson for Trump told The Associated Press that he was “absolutely joking.”

The spokesperson explained that Trump had been making fun of himself and his reputation for dating younger women.

The explanation framed the remark as humor rather than a serious expression of romantic interest.

Still, the comment has continued to resurface in discussions about Trump’s public behavior toward his daughter.

Mary’s latest account does not establish any connection between that television appearance and the interactions she described from her own family experiences.

It does, however, introduce another recollection into a subject that has generated considerable public curiosity over the years.

The family member who has repeatedly challenged Trump

Mary Trump has become one of the president’s most outspoken critics within his extended family.

As the daughter of Fred Trump Jr., she grew up with firsthand exposure to the family whose business interests eventually helped propel Donald Trump into national prominence.

Her relationship with her uncle has since become deeply strained.

Mary has publicly discussed the Trump family’s internal relationships on numerous occasions, often presenting a sharply different picture from the successful and tightly connected family image associated with the president’s public persona.

Her professional background as a clinical psychologist has also attracted attention to her commentary, although her qualifications do not independently verify her personal recollections.

The latest interview follows that established pattern.

Rather than focusing on Trump’s policies or political opponents, Mary discussed the personal relationships she observed during family gatherings.

Her account portrayed a father who, in her view, showed limited emotional involvement with most of his children but behaved differently toward Ivanka.

However, the considerable age differences between Mary and her cousins, together with their relatively infrequent contact, mean that her observations cover only part of the family’s private history.

According to the report, neither Donald Trump nor Ivanka Trump appears to have publicly responded to Mary’s latest comments.
