Negotiations between Russia and Ukraine have stalled, according to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, who said communication channels remain open but unused.

Talks Have Stalled

Speaking to reporters on September 12, Peskov told Russian state media RIA-Novosti that discussions at the level of negotiating groups are not currently active.

“For now, it would be fair to say there is a pause,” he said.

Communication Channels Still Exist

Despite the lack of movement, Peskov insisted that Moscow and Kyiv could restart talks if needed.

“Our negotiators have the opportunity to communicate through these channels, but for now, I would rather say there is a pause,” he explained.

Peskov emphasized that Russia remains open to dialogue, framing the Kremlin as ready for a settlement.

“The Russian side maintains its readiness to move forward on the path of peaceful dialogue, on a peaceful search for a settlement,” he said.

Europe Blamed for Obstacles

The Kremlin spokesperson also accused European governments of hindering progress.

“The fact that the Europeans interfere is indeed true—it’s no secret to anyone,” Peskov argued, suggesting the West has prevented negotiations from advancing.

Not a Dead End, Says Kremlin

When asked if the process had reached a standstill, Peskov avoided declaring it over.

He warned against “wearing rose-colored glasses” and expecting quick results but implied that Moscow sees a window for future talks.

EU Calls for Direct Talks With Zelenskyy

During a visit to Uzhhorod, EU Council President António Costa took a different stance, insisting that any peace process must involve Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy directly.

“The time has come for peace in Ukraine,” Costa said, adding that U.S. President Donald Trump had introduced “new dynamics” for negotiations.

Criticism of Putin’s Actions

Costa criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin for dragging out decisions while intensifying strikes on Ukrainian cities. “This is a bad sign,” he remarked.

“If you want peace, go to President Zelenskyy and start peace negotiations.”
