O’Day speaks out after Diddy sentencing

Aubrey O’Day is using Sean “Diddy” Combs’ sentencing as a warning for others in the music industry.

The 41-year-old singer took to X on October 3 to share a message for young performers following the music mogul’s 50-month prison sentence.

“A cautionary reminder”

O’Day, who rose to fame on MTV’s Making the Band under Combs’ direction, said the real lesson from the Diddy case is about personal boundaries.

“Let this serve as a cautionary reminder to young and aspiring individuals pursuing their dreams,” she wrote.

“The moment someone in a position of power oversteps your boundaries or demands more than is legitimately required of you, walk away and do not look back.”

“Your well-being is worth more than any opportunity”

She went on to encourage others to prioritize their safety above career ambitions.

“Too often, those who misuse their power, even when exposed, face far fewer consequences than the harm inflicted upon their victims,” O’Day continued.

“Protect yourself at the first sign of coercion or impropriety. If something feels wrong, trust that instinct and remove yourself from the situation. Your well-being is worth more than any opportunity.”

She previously claimed that the producer once asked her to sign a nondisclosure agreement to stop her from speaking negatively about him or his label.

In 2023, she said she encouraged her former Danity Kane bandmates not to take the deal.

Two decades of silence

Before Combs’ trial earlier this year, O’Day told People that she had been speaking out about the rapper for nearly 20 years.

“This trial is bittersweet for me,” she said.

“My podcast is the first step in reclaiming my voice and career that I was robbed of when I was abruptly fired from my band in order to appear discredited.”

Sean “Diddy” Combs, 55, was sentenced to more than four years in federal prison after being convicted on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution.

He was acquitted of sex trafficking and racketeering charges.

In addition to prison time, he was fined $500,000 and will serve five years of supervised release.

Judge calls for accountability

At sentencing, Judge Arun Subramanian said the lengthy prison term was necessary “to send a message to abusers and victims alike that exploitation and violence against women is met with real accountability.”

He also dismissed the defense’s argument that Combs’ so-called “freak-offs” were consensual, calling them evidence of exploitation and abuse.
