Jay Leno has opened up about the realities of caring for his wife, Mavis, following her diagnosis with advanced dementia.

In a heartfelt interview during a recent charity event, the comedian and former Tonight Show host spoke candidly about the challenges, his deep love, and the daily commitment to caring for his wife of over 40 years.

In April 2024, Leno, 75, was granted conservatorship of Mavis, who had been formally diagnosed with advanced dementia.

At the time, her lawyer noted that she was “in agreement” with the arrangement and was receiving “excellent care” from her husband.

“It’s not work”

Speaking at the 34th annual Love Ride in Glendale, California, on November 9, Leno said he doesn’t view his role as a caregiver as a burden.

“I’ve been very lucky in my life. My wife is fighting dementia and all that, but it’s not cancer. It’s not a tumor, so I enjoy taking care of her,” he told People magazine.

“It’s not work, because people come up and say they feel so sorry. I understand the sympathy, because I know a lot of people are going through it, but it’s okay. I like taking care of her. I enjoy her company, and we have a good time.”

Leno added that while the journey has been “tricky,” he considers himself fortunate.

Decades of devotion

Jay and Mavis Leno met in the 1970s and married in 1980.

Despite his reputation as a comic, Jay often speaks seriously about the strength of their bond. He once said one of the secrets to their long marriage is choosing a partner who embodies the best parts of yourself.

“Marry someone who’s the person you wish you could be, and it works out okay,” he previously told People.

Mavis had also shared how her perspective on marriage changed when she met Jay. “This was the first time I was ever with someone where I had a perfect, calm sense of having arrived at my destination,” she said in a 1987 interview.

Now, decades later, Jay’s commitment remains just as strong. After participating in the Love Ride, he planned to go straight home to make lunch for Mavis.

“I’m very lucky,” he said. “I enjoy her company.”
